Biosketch and Other Support

BSOS Application

The Biosketch and Other Support (BSOS) application, available in access.caltech.edu, is designed to collect other support information in one place to aid researchers (principal investigators, senior and key personnel) in creating a Biosketch and Other/Current and Pending/In-kind support documentation for federal sponsors to be disclosed in proposals and annual reports, as required. Caltech recommends you review the information that is provided here and decide which components should be provided to your sponsor.

The BSOS application also allows you to designate personnel on campus who can view this information. It is recommended you designate your Division Operations Officer and your Grant Manager so that they can assist you in creating your Biosketch and Other Support for submission. If you are a co-investigator, postdoc or research staff member it is also recommended that you also designate your PI/supervisor.

BIOSKETCH

From the DFIC, the BSOS collects any commitments or appointments that should be reported in a researcher's Biosketch, and any financial interests or collaborative relationships that could be interpreted as Other Support by the federal agency sponsors.

OTHER SUPPORT

For Other Support, Sections 1-7 of the BSOS provide the following information from Caltech sources:

Section 1: Other Support - DFIC

(Related to your Financial Interests or Commitments Outside of Caltech) This information is drawn from your DFIC. It is not editable unless you change your DFIC

Section 2: Additional Possible Other and In-Kind Support (Editable)

This section is fully editable and there is functionality for researchers or their designees to add sources of other or in kind support that are not related to the researcher's financial interests or commitments. This section also allows researchers or their designees to provide an Excel spreadsheet with collaborators or other sources of other support. Here is a link to the Other Support Worksheet Template:

Section 3: Other Support (Caltech Grants, Contracts, and Gifts)

This information is from the Caltech financial system. You should see all active awards with an active PTA. You may be missing brand new awards that do not yet have a PTA. You may also see some gifts which no longer have funds in them. If you have questions, reach out to [email protected].

Section 4: Other Support (Caltech Awards from which You Have Been Paid)

This information includes all Caltech Awards where your time was charged and you were paid in the last and current fiscal years.

Section 5: Other Support (Externally Funded Postdoctoral Fellows)

This information includes funding support from the postdoc office and DPM.

Section 6: Other Support (Graduate Students - Financial Interests or Commitments)

This information includes DFIC from graduate students in your line of supervision that may be reportable as In-Kind Support. This section includes reported fellowships, stipends, and scholarships ("Fellowship"); academic or research appointments ("Appointment"); and involvement as an employee, intern, volunteer, consultant, or instructor ("Other Activity") that your graduate student has disclosed.

Section 7: Other Support (Staff under your Supervision- Includes Research Staff and Postdocs)

This information includes DFIC from research staff and postdocs in your line of supervision that may be reportable as In-Kind Support. This section includes reported fellowships, stipends, and scholarships ("Fellowship"); academic or research appointments ("Appointment"); and involvement as an employee, intern, volunteer, consultant, or instructor ("Other Activity") that your staff member has disclosed.
