Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged with reviewing protocols for research and teaching that involve the use of recombinant DNA (rDNA) subject to the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines), infectious biological agents, and biohazardous agents at Caltech. Committee oversight helps to ensure that all research protocols involving biohazardous materials and the facilities used to conduct the research are in compliance with existing government regulations and applicable Caltech policies.
The IBC membership is constituted in accordance with the NIH Guidelines and the IBC meets monthly to review protocols proposing use of recombinant DNA and biohazards.
The IBC works in conjunction with the Institute Animal Care and Use Committee, the Institutional Review Board, the Human Embryos and Stem Cells Committee, and radiation safety.
The Institutional Biosafety Committee meets the 1st Tuesday of the month, as necessary. A meeting may be canceled if there are no protocols for review.
All protocols must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the meeting date in order to be considered at that meeting. Please contact ibc@caltech.edu for more details.
